Top 5 Most Popular Cat Breeds of 2023

There are 45 pedigreed cat breeds currently recognized by the Cat Fanciers’ Association. From the gregarious Maine Coon to the gentle Russian blue, there is a perfect cat for everyone! These were the top 5 cat breeds of 2023 for United States cat owners according to the CFA.

  1. Ragdoll

Ragdolls have held the coveted No. 1 spot on the most popular cat breed for four years straight. These beautiful blue-eyed cats are known for their outgoing, friendly personalities and unique coat colors and patterns. Ragdolls thrive on human interaction and tend to “go limp” when picked up (hence their name). Known for their trusting nature, these cats make wonderful family companions but should be kept indoors.

With their gregarious and playful disposition, it is easy to see why Maine coon cats have earned a special place in people’s hearts. Weighing up to 20 pounds, this breed is the largest of all pedigreed cats. The Maine coon is one of the oldest breeds in North America, originating in the state of (you guessed it) Maine, where it is the official state cat. The lineage of Maine coon cats is surrounded in mystery, folk tails and myths.

Characterized by large eyes, oversized butterfly-like ears and a short and wavy coat, Devon rex cats emerged in England during the late 1950s. These cats are curious, active and energetic and crave attention from their humans. They are small, usually weighing between 6 to 9 pounds. Due to their unique coat, they shed minimally compared to other cat breeds, and may be hypoallergenic.

  1. Exotic Shorthair

The Exotic Shorthair (not to be confused with the Oriental Shorthair) was developed as a short-haired version of the Persian cat. They are defined by small ears with a well rounded tip, full and round cheeks, and large, round eyes. Interestingly, they may carry a copy of the recessive longhair gene, and when two such cats mate, there is a 1 in 4 chance of their offspring being longhaired. They are a quiet and curious breed and can be more active than their long-haired cousins.

The Persian cat, also known as the Persian Longhair, is a long-haired breed of cat with a round face, short muzzle and long hair. The first documented ancestors of the Persian cat may have come Eastern Iran or Western Afghanistan. Although it is unclear exactly when long-haired cats first appeared in history, the first purebed Persians arrived in the United States around 1875. These beautiful cats have sweet, gentle and patient personalities and prefer calm environments where they can relax and lounge.
